A shaft of morning sunlight shone from beneath the mantle of cloud
to touch the tops of the still, turning leaves.
Just for a moment
washing them with the promise of the burnished riches
to be found in the depths of autumn;
then withdrew
leaving me alone again in the misty, grey-green morn.

Thankfully, there are more days of abundant sun, than those misty-green morns.

I do love the sunny Indian summer days Magnolia, yet also the bittersweet melancholy as the days shorten and the year declines into winter’s depths.
