The Coffee Cup

Last Saturday I had breakfast at the Coffee Cup, a diner that was first opened in 1947 by Withers Turner, back when Charlotte was still segregated.

Over the past 60 years, not much has changed inside the restaurant.

The menu features Soul Food at it’s best – Pork Chops, Country Style Steak, Stewed Beef, Fried, Baked, or Smothered Chicken, Croaker or Catfish, Pigfeet and Smoked Ribs;  not to mention Macaroni & Cheese, Cabbage, Collard Greens, Candied Yams, Mashed Potatoes & Gravy, Green Beans, Rice, Dressing and Pinto Beans.  Dessert is Peach or Sweet Potato Cobbler, Banana Pudding or Poundcake.

My companion and I had breakfast cooked to order – eggs, potatos or grits, bacon, biscuits and all the coffee we could drink.  The food was great and reasonably priced.  I definitely plan to return for lunch someday.

  1. I never made it back for lunch, and unfortunately this location was demolished in Autumn 2007 and the restaurant and staff have since relocated to 9311 J.W. Clay Blvd in Charlotte. On their website there’s a reward and phone number offered for info on the stolen sign. Don’t know what that’s all about.
